I’ve never been big on talent competition shows like ‘American Idol’ etc., but when I saw my wife watching this clip of Susan Boyle on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ I couldn’t help but pass it along. Never judge a book by its cover. Great way to give your morning a lift with an inspiring video.

Update: It has been quite a week for Ms. Boyle and more proof of how powerful New & Social Media are.

After much speculation, it is official. I’ve tossed my hat in the ring.

Along with my partners at GrapeRadio, I am excited to annouce that we have won the 2008 James Beard Award in the category of webcasting!

The James Beard Foundation Awards are the nation’s preeminent honors for culinary professionals. Often referred to as the “Oscars of Food and Wine” more than 60 awards are given out each year in the categories of cookbooks, restaurants and chefs, design and graphics, broadcast media, journalism, and achievement. Award winners are selected by their industry peers, with more than 600 culinary professionals involved in the voting process. This year’s award ceremony in New York was hosted by Kim Cattrall and Bobby Flay and other winners include such name as Mario Batali, Tom Colicchio, Padma Lakshmi and Top Chef.

Here’s a 50 minute video of a presentation I gave to a private group of radio and television executives in Minneapolis back in August, 2006. (Yes, I went to First Avenue & 7th St. entry.) It was a good group, focused on how to best play in the “new media” world. While it is almost 18 months old, I am struck by how current it still is. (Podcasters still have some work to do.) I think I might use it as my “demo reel” when people ask about having me speak.

My partners at Grape Radio have put together their first short form documentary. They chose to focus on the Russian River Valley wine region and so far, everyone I have shown it to has been blown away. Podcasting has certainly evolved. One friend commented that content like this is proof that independent “new media” can compete with anything on traditional TV. One of the players for the Anaheim Ducks brought the Stanley Cup by my son’s swim meet this morning.

One of my partners in Grape Radio, Brian Clark, and I are joining our local county sheriff’s Search and Rescue team. Yesterday we were at the local fire training facility working on basic rappelling from a 5 story tower. This is a video of Brian’s first time on a rope. For a total rookie he looks like a pro.
