Midnight Movie Week

I am itching to do some Reel Reviews. I have a backlog of films I’d love to do but thought a theme might be fun. How about a week of the definitive midnight films: El Topo, Pink Flamingos, The Harder They Come, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Eraserhead? Yes, no, maybe so?

Yes! Good idea. How about Dead Alive, Evil Dead II, Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

All good films Jon. I actually have about three pages of notes lying around here somewhere for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Just never got around to recording the podcast for it. That one has always been a favorite of mine.

Good news is that I have already done Faster, Pussycat! Kill!… Kill! In fact, Tura Satana even commented.

I think midnight movies is a great theme, no doubt El Topo is at the top of the list.

No doubt you are aware of Danny Peary’s books on Cult Classics. I applaud your format for Reel Reviews as being somewhat related to his format for each movie entry in his book. I liked the detailed synopsis followed by the more detailed and historical look at the finer points of the film. It’s valuable stuff that academics find to boring and not rigorous enough to do themselves. That’s why there’s a market for Danny Peary books and Mike Geoghagen’s Reel Reviews. I missed seeing it back in June when it came to the George Eastman House’s Dryden Theater. Occasionaly they will pull prints from their archive or rent a print from a distribution outfit. I would love to see someone like the Dryden Theater pair up with Danny Peary and do a big screen seires of Cult Classis with his branding and everything.

Yes, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls would be a good one to switch into your list.

I think the definitive midnight flick has to be “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. It’s a cult classic after almost 30 years people still line up at midnight on Saturday to dress up and do the Time Warp.
