Going Wireless

2/16/2006 By Michael

Wireless
Marantz PMD671, Sennheiser wireless system and Sennheiser MD46

I decided to invest in a wireless setup to use when doing certain kinds of events for the Disneyland Resort Podcast and some of the other projects I work on. I have always been particularly jealous of the TV crews using wireless interview mics when doing red carpet events. Invariably I am crammed in there with my audio assistant tethered by wire. With this new setup, the person manning the recorder can step back and comfortably do his job and I am freed from constantly watching my wires and can focus on the interviews. I went with the Sennheiser EW 100ENG G2 which comes with one receiver, a plug-on mic transmitter as well as a second transmitter and lavalier mic. I can use the additional lavalier mic and transmitter to record presentations etc. I am looking forward to using the system. Just in my experimenting today it worked great.

Michael, I know how annoying the chords out of the side of a PMD 670 can be so an interesting post on the wireless solution.

Just wondering where on the net you can get mic flags from (like the disney one you have)? Can’t find them anywhere. Is it a home made frame with your own prints or a pro job?

    Any help would be great.

Here are some links for both a blank one and a company that makes them.

Thanks a lot for that Michael.

That looks very bulky compared to something small and digital like an iRiver. Is the sound quality that much better?

    Chris,

The short answer is yes. There are a number of features that the Marantz recorder has that I like, particularly for situations where you get one shot, either you get it right or you don’t get it at all. So for celebrity events and podcasts that I am being paid to produce, I feel more comfortable using pro-level gear like this. That said, it is expensive and I don’t know that the hobbyist podcaster would necessarily find the same value in it that I do. As an example, I often have an audio assistant with me monitoring the audio and the levels. This set up works well for that. I did a presentation on the different Marantz recorders and the gear I use for the Orange County Podcaster group. They recordered it and I’ll like to it when it is posted.
