Duke Podcast

Reel Reviews - East Coast Office

I got to take a look at the podcasting lab at Duke University while here at the Symposium. Looks very familiar to me - see any resemblance? They used the Podcast About The Podcast as their template. I took that as quite a compliment.

Off to Duke

I am headed off to the Duke Podcasting Symposium. I arrive a day early as I am presenting to some classes on Monday as well as doing the first demo of the PrivaCastâ„¢ system for some faculty members. While I have been quiet about PrivaCastâ„¢, it is the Enterprise RSS system I have been developing with the help of an extremely gifted team - details to come soon. There is a PrivaCast Blog. I am looking forward to the symposium and will try to post some notes and photos - a good number of friends will be there as well as some new folks I hope to meet.

Book Reviews

Over the last few weeks we have received a good number of book reviews and comments both in blog and podcast form. I must say I am extremely gratified with positive nature of all the reviews I have seen. When you work this hard on a project, it is nice to know that it has been well received. I figured it was time to put up a post with links:

Rock and Roll Geek Interview

I appeared on Michael Butler’s Rock and Roll Geek Show. We had a great talk about the book, early podcasting and the general state of things now. If you are interested you can find it here.

Podcasting Goes Corporate

I was pleased to be featured in an article entitled Podcasting Goes Corporate that ran on the cover of the OC Register Business Section today (9/12). It focuses mainly on the work I have done for the Disneyland Podcast. Also mentioned are fellow podcasters Greg Cangialosi and Tim Bourquin, both of whom helped with the first Disney effort. You can read it free from registration requirements here.

Dvorak’s About Face - Wrong Again

Everyone knew that John Dvorak was eventually going to have to do an about face on podcasting. His first podcasting piece published in October of 2004, Podcasting: Not Ready For Prime Time was the typical nay saying prevalent in the early days of podcasting. Today was the day for Dvorak to come around, Podcasting: The Next Big Thing. While I don’t know that John Dvorak’s take on podcasting is particularly important for those of us involved in it - I do appreciate that he has “joined the party”. To that I say welcome John. However, I did find this quote interesting:

An executive at Disney will be in a meeting and ask the staff how many people knew this was going on, and three geeks in the back will raise their hands. Then slowly two-thirds of the room will raise their hands. None of these people will have known that everyone already knew. It’s about then that podcasting will suddenly become the rage. It’ll be a Time magazine cover. That will be by the middle of next year. Then the money will start flying around like crazy.

I think he is wrong again, at least as far as Disney is concerned. As someone who has interviewed both Michael Eisner (CEO) and Bob Iger (President and CEO Elect) of the Walt Disney Corporation, I can tell you that executives at Disney are at the forefront of companies getting involved in podcasting. We featured Michael Eisner talking about podcasting on the Disneyland Podcast we did in early May of this year - that was long before even John Dvorak came around.
